Project 1 Description
In this experimental furniture project I explored how I could use cutting-edge form-making technology to reinterpret an indigenous craft practice. Furthermore, I investigated how to design furniture that unifies traditional woodworking with cutting-edge additive manufacturing. The body of the table is an aggregate structure of 120 interlocking parts made of 4D-printed thermoplastic. This assembly is woven together using a traditional Native American bead weaving technique. The form is captured by two wooden rings, and completed with a glass tabletop.
Project 2 Description
I made the Symbiotic Mask in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Its purpose is to comment on DIY PPE, and the opportunity we have now to reevaluate the way we engage with our planet. The mask is about having an empathetic and mutually beneficial relationship with nature. This happens through shared breath: the wearer breathes the same air as the native wildflower. As they do so, condensation forms on the inside of the mask and drips down into the soil, watering the plant. So, through using this product, the wearer keeps the alive and expresses empathy for nature.
Project 3 Description
This exercise explores the perceived language of objects that communicate with us to elicit interaction. It involved shaping a found deer antler into a refined object that compels someone to pick it up and explore it with their hands. My approach was to use both subtractive and additive sculpting techniques on the antler that drew inspiration from the natural form of the object. The refined artifact honors the original, but warps and exaggerates the features of the three-dimensional composition. This project was a very valuable exploration into how I could use forms in nature as inspiration in product design.
Bio
Hi, I'm Matt! I’m a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a BDes in product design and minor in photography.
My work with products places emphasis on experimentation with form-making techniques and material interactions, with the goal of creating intriguing artifacts capable of evoking abstract concepts through visual metaphors. I also find avenues for creative expression in image making and multimedia art projects. I'm fascinated by exploring how my diverse creative interests can expand and intersect in exciting ways, and how these disciplines can have wide reaching impacts.
